General Health Advice

Immunisations

Meningitis and MMR

If you are 24 years old or younger and starting university for the first time it is strongly recommended that you have the Men ACWY vaccine. Meningitis is a serious infection which can kill.

Mumps has also become a problem in some UK universities. We are recommending that all students who have not had two doses of the MMR vaccine visit their GP as soon as possible to have the vaccine. There is no upper age limit for having the vaccine. There will be no charge for being immunised.

To receive the Meningitis ACWY vaccination, you can receive the vaccination from your GP or they can redirect you to where you can receive this.

Allergies

The Anaphylaxis Campaign have identified that 16-24 year olds are a high risk group when it comes to managing their allergies, and this includes university students.

Download their booklet Preparing for and Managing your Allergies at University – A Guide for University Students

  • Remember to carry two adrenaline auto-injectors with you at all times
  • Let the people you are with know where to find your adrenaline and how to use it
  • Register with your local GP or university health centre after moving in
  • Check regularly, through the viewing window on your adrenaline auto-injectors, that the solution is clear and colourless
  • Sign up for the expiry alert service for your brand of auto-injector.

Pregnancy and Maternity

City St George’s University of London believes that becoming a parent or caring for a child should not, in itself, prevent any student from succeeding in their studies. City St George’s is committed to being as flexible as possible to ensure that no student is disadvantaged due to pregnancy, paternity, parental responsibility, or maternity, while ensuring academic standards are not compromised.

The health and safety of a pregnant student is of paramount importance at all times, and all students covered by this policy should be treated in a sensitive, non-judgemental and confidential manner. Only members of staff who need to be informed for valid reasons will be notified of a student’s circumstances and this should be done only with the student’s prior consent. A risk assessment of all pregnant students is required as a health and safety measure and so staff involved in the risk assessment will need to know, and consequently any academic staff required to facilitate any following adjustments will also need to be informed, with the student’s consent.

Students are encouraged to notify City St George’s as soon as possible about their pregnancy through their programme year lead, course director or equivalent and their programme administrator. Students entitled to partners’ leave should do likewise. It is intended that the programme year lead/course director drives the process of ensuring this policy is complied with and that the programme administrator oversees administrative tasks entailed in managing the process through pregnancy and maternity. Students who are also staff Tooting campus will need to ensure they refer to the staff pregnancy and maternity policy as well as this one, and should contact Human Resources for more information.

Merging City and St George’s Resources
