Investing in Tooting's Future
In 2024-25, we announced a major investment in our Tooting campus, designed to enhance your learning and working environment. This ambitious programme will bring significant improvements, from upgraded facilities to essential maintenance, ensuring a modern and safe campus for everyone.
What you’ll see happening
You may notice some temporary changes to the campus environment as we carry out various improvement works. These may include:
- Building Assessments: We’ll be conducting regular checks to ensure our buildings meet safety standards and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Proactive maintenance: We’ll be carrying out essential maintenance to keep our buildings in good condition and ensure a smooth-running campus.
- Refurbishments: Upgrades to facilities to enhance functionality and safety.
We understand that improvements of this scale can sometimes cause temporary inconvenience. We'll do our best to minimise any disruption and keep you informed every step of the way.
In 2024-25, we completed several works to improve facilities and enhance your experience on the Tooting campus. These included:
- A six-month programme of improvement work to overhaul both the decorative and functional state of the Rob Lowe Sports Centre, through a process of co-design with the Students’ Union.
- Significant improvements to Horton Halls, including a full upgrade of the water heating system, comprehensive fire safety enhancements, and smoke extract replacement.
- Improvements to the environmental control infrastructure across the Tooting estate that will unlock significant future improvements in heating and cooling.
“The reopening of the Rob Lowe Sports Centre marks a vibrant new era for the Tooting community. This revitalised space demonstrates a significant investment and commitment from both the University and the Students’ Union in delivering competitive and social sport in Tooting. The space also ensures the Students’ Union can run a range of activities that foster connections, improve wellbeing and inspire student success.”
Philip Gilks, Chief Executive of City St George’s Students’ Union.
Enhancements to the Rob Lowe centre include improved communal spaces and changing areas as well as upgraded lighting, heating, safety and security infrastructure, and an entrance ramp to improve access to some of the spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this not achievable in a shorter time frame?
A lot of this work will need to happen while teaching and research activities are taking place. There is not an opportunity to decant to alternative premises while the work is undertaken.
Couldn’t this work be done out of hours?
While some tasks can be completed in the evenings or at weekends, this programme is extensive and would take significantly longer to finish if we only worked out of hours.
Completing the work while the building is occupied allows us to progress more quickly and ultimately minimise the overall disruption to teaching, learning, and research.
Will works be taking place during my exams?
We understand that exam periods are a crucial time, and we've made every effort to schedule any necessary works to minimise disruption. We've carefully considered the exam timetable when planning our activities. If you have any specific concerns about potential disruptions during your exams, please don't hesitate to contact your course team to discuss this further.
