After a busy year of lectures, coursework and exams, summer is a chance to recharge, explore new opportunities and prepare for the year ahead - whatever that looks like for you.
Take a break
A break can look different for everyone. You might spend more time with family and friends, catch up on sleep, travel, enjoy nature or return to hobbies you did not have time for during term.
Try not to feel guilty for slowing down. Rest is part of looking after yourself and recovering after a busy academic year.
City St George's has shared how to access University support if you need it over the summer.
You can also contact City St George’s Students’ Union Advice & Support service, which remains open throughout the summer break.
Explore more of London
During term-time, it can be easy to only see London through your commute, campus and the library.
Summer is the perfect time to visit places you've never quite got round to exploring during term. Here are our top things to do in London over the summer.
From free museums and outdoor cinemas to food markets and festivals, London has plenty to offer without breaking your budget. Many galleries, museums and public spaces are free.
You can also look out for student-friendly events and activities through City St George’s Students’ Union.
Do something for future you
You do not need to have your whole career planned during summer.
Instead, try doing one small thing that could help you in the future. This could be updating your CV, making a LinkedIn profile, applying for a part-time job, or looking at what kind of work experience is related to your interests or degree.
City St George’s CareersHub is a great place to start. You can search for opportunities, access careers support and find support from the Careers and Employability team. CareersHub is currently only available to students based at Clerkenwell and Moorgate campuses.
If you’re interested in temporary work, you could also look at Unitemps. It advertises temporary roles, internships and Student Ambassador opportunities at City St George’s and with local businesses.
City St George’s Volunteering can help you find flexible volunteering opportunities. Volunteering can be a good way to build confidence, meet people and try something different.
Use your feedback
Summer can also be a good time to look back at the academic year.
You do not need to revise everything again. A simple starting point is to read through your feedback from assignments or exams. Think about what went well, then choose one thing you would like to improve next year.
This might be your essay structure. It might be your referencing. It might be how early you start preparing for assessments.
If you want support with academic skills, City St George’s has services that can help. The Academic Skills team offers tutorials for Clerkenwell and Moorgate students. These can help with study skills and academic writing.
For Tooting students, Study+ appointments offer one-to-one support with study strategies, academic assignments and English language help. These appointments are available all year round.
The University's libraries will remain open over the summer, and a range of virtual resources b are available to you, wherever you are. Explore these resources and summer opening hours on the Student Hub.
Learn something just for fun
Learning over summer does not have to feel like extra coursework.
You could read about a topic you found interesting this year, listen to a podcast linked to your subject, watch a documentary, read a book, or try a short online course.
City St George’s students have access to LinkedIn Learning, which has thousands of courses on different topics, including employability, digital skills, creative skills and study support. You can also earn certificates for completed courses and add them to your LinkedIn profile.
Final note
There is no "right" way to spend your summer. Whether you're working, travelling, volunteering, catching up on sleep or simply taking a well-earned break, every experience can help you return feeling refreshed and ready for the year ahead.
