Student Awards

The City St George’s Skills and Recognition Award is an initiative where students can showcase the skills they’ve developed in academic and extracurricular activities by building an online portfolio on Canvas.

Merging legacy City and St George's resources

As we bring together resources for Clerkenwell & Moorgate (legacy City) and Tooting (legacy St George’s) students, some content may be specific to one campus and not the other. For the most relevant information, try using specific keywords or exploring content related to your department. If you need help, our support teams are available to guide you.

Clerkenwell & Moorgate students can use Support@City

Tooting students can contact studentlifecentre@sgul.ac.uk.

For Tooting Campus Students

Staff can support their students by increasing awareness about the Award among students and colleagues, and encouraging students to actively reflect on their skills development by highlighting how specific academic training and non-academic activities can be included in one’s portfolio.

Where will your skills take you?

Do you want to stand out from the crowd? Show your additional skills beyond your degree? Demonstrate that you are career ready?

Whatever you do after you finish your degree, our goal is to help you build long-term transferable skills that will benefit you throughout your whole career. Take part in the City St George’s Skills and Recognition Award and prepare a record of reflections to support your continuing professional development before you graduate.

During your time at City St George’s, you will not only develop your skills in your course-related activities but you will also be taking part in lots of extra-curricular activities. These might be on campus, in your own community or perhaps you have a part-time job.

The St George’s Skills and Recognition Award offers you the opportunity to make the most of your experience by reflecting on and demonstrating 11 essential transferrable skills (listed below).

There are two types of Award – the City St George’s Skills and Recognition Award, when you focus on 7 skills, and the City St George’s Skills and Recognition Master Award, when you focus on all 11 skills.

Why should you take part?

  • Make the most of experience you’ve already gained by reflecting and illustrating what you’ve learnt.
  • Think critically about your skills and how you can demonstrate them with evidence.
  • Identify any skill gaps for your chosen career path and plan how to fill them.
  • Create an online portfolio of your work and achievements that you can easily share to enhance your career prospects.
  • Get one to one support from City St George's Careers Consultants with your skill reflection and career management.

To claim an Award you need to

  • Enrol on the Canvas City St George’s Skills and Recognition Award module
  • Use STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result/Reflection) forms to reflect on and illustrate 7 or 11 of the Award skills
  • Upload materials to evidence your skills, such as photos, videos, blog posts etc, where available
  • Meet with a Careers Consultant during your process of reflecting on your skills.
  • Write a summary reflection about your overall experience and skills gained to be reviewed by the Award panel.

The 11 skills are: Communication, Digital literacy, Innovation and creativity, Interpersonal, Leadership and management, Analysis, Planning & Organisation, Problem solving, Research & Investigation, Teamwork.

You can contact the Careers Consultants by booking an appointment via Canvas or via email.

Your STAR forms, evidence, and summary reflection will be reviewed by the Award panel and you may receive feedback if specific points need to be addressed.

Your Award will be acknowledged through a certificate offered to you at Graduation each year.

Completion guidelines for academic year 2025/26:

If you are graduating in 2026 the award must be completed by 29 May 2026. By 29 May 2026 you will need to have met with a Careers Consultant on two occasions:

  • 1st meeting - half way through completing your award so that the Careers Consultant can review and provide you with feedback on your evidence completed so far.
  • 2nd meeting - prior to 29 May deadline so that your completed award can be signed off.
