Add Reflections and Claim Skills
Add Reflections and Claim Skills
You can claim skills for any experience recorded.
Pre-listed activities and events come with suggested skills (two primary, three secondary) chosen by the activity provider.
You can change these skills if others better match your experience.

When you click 'My experiences', you'll see all the experiences you recorded
For each experience, you can see the skills you claimed and a star rating showing how much you feel you have developed each skill.
To edit the skills listed and change the star rating, click 'Claim skills'. ![]()
Remove a skill by clicking the dustbin icon. Change the star rating by clicking the number of stars that reflects your skill gain.
Limit yourself to five skills per experience - claiming too many skills reduces credibility. If you developed many skills, choose the five you developed most.
If you click 'Reflections' (or '+ Reflect' on the previous page) you can add a reflection for this skill.
Add reflections
'Reflections' are short pieces of writing where you explain how you developed a claimed skill through your experience.
This process prepares you for job application questions that often appear in written applications or interviews.
Click 'Start reflection' (if you click '+ Reflect' to the right of a skill on 'My experiences', you will end up at the same page).
We use the CARL structure for skills reflection - a simple framework to help you tell compelling stories about how you developed a skill in a specific situation. If you know the STAR method, CARL is a modified version.
C - Context
The context merges the situation you were in and the task you had to complete. Set the scene, but keep it relevant and brief. Describe specifically what you had to do.
A - Action
What did you personally ('I') do & how? Evidence your skills. This should make up around 70% of your answer.
R - Result
What was the positive outcome?
L - Learning
Mention anything you learned as a result of this experience. This could include things you would do differently in future.
