Starting university is exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming, especially when it comes to meeting new people.

Whether you're moving into halls, commuting, or just looking to expand your circle, remember that you're definitely not the only one hoping to make new friends.

Here are a few simple ways to put yourself out there and start building connections.

1. Say yes to opportunities

Welcome Week, society taster sessions and campus events are all designed to help students meet each other. Even if you're feeling nervous, saying yes to an event could lead to a great conversation or a new friendship.

2. Join a society or sports club

One of the easiest ways to meet people is by joining a society or sports club that matches your interests. Whether you're into cheerleading, gaming, photography, music, or volunteering, having something in common makes starting conversations easier.

3. Start small conversations

You don't have to walk up to someone and become best friends instantly. Sometimes it's as simple as asking someone what course they're studying, how they're finding university so far, or if they've been to a particular campus café before. Small conversations can quickly turn into bigger ones.

4. Make the most of your classes

The people sitting next to you in lectures and seminars could become some of your closest friends. Arrive a few minutes early, stay behind after class, or suggest creating a group chat to help everyone stay on top of coursework. Beyond helping to make friends, the University has shared information on how showing up to class consistently benefits you in the long run.

5. Don't be afraid to make the first move

It can feel intimidating to introduce yourself, but chances are the other person is just as nervous. Asking someone if they want to grab lunch, study together, or attend an event can be all it takes to start a friendship.

6. Be patient

Not every conversation will lead to a close friendship straight away, and that's completely normal. Friendships take time to develop, so don't be discouraged if it doesn't happen overnight. Keep putting yourself out there and give yourself time to settle in.

7. Remember that everyone is finding their feet

It's easy to think everyone else has already found their group, but the reality is that many students are still looking to meet people, even weeks into the semester. You're never "too late" to make new friends.

Final thoughts

Meeting new people can feel daunting, but university is full of opportunities to connect with others. Whether it's through classes, societies, campus events, or simply saying hello to someone new, every conversation is a chance to build a new friendship. Be yourself, stay open-minded, and remember that everyone is figuring things out at their own pace.
