Carers week (Monday 8 June - Sunday 14 June) shines a light on the vital role played by unpaid carers across the UK, to increase understanding of the challenges they face and contributions they bring to their families and communities.
The University’s UniCares scheme provides support for students at City St George’s who are young adult carers, ensuring they can thrive throughout their time at university. If you would like to find out more about the support available, please contact the UniCares team.
Michel Salamouni, a UniCares Coordinator, has written a blog highlighting the support UniCares provides:
"Carers Week is an annual campaign that shines a light on the vital role played by unpaid carers across the UK. It aims to increase understanding of the challenges carers face, celebrate the invaluable contributions they make to their families and communities, and encourage those who may not recognise themselves as carers to identify their caring responsibilities and access available support. The campaign is coordinated by Carers UK in partnership with a range of other charities and organisations.
In 2026, Carers Week takes place from 8 to 14 June and is centred on the theme, Building Carer Friendly Communities. The theme highlights the importance of creating environments where carers are recognised, valued, and supported in all aspects of their lives.
At City St George's, we recognise that balancing caring responsibilities with university study can be challenging and often places additional pressures on students. Caring responsibilities can affect a student's finances, physical and mental wellbeing, academic progress, and personal relationships.
UniCares is the dedicated support service for students who are young adult carers. The UniCares team provides financial, pastoral, and academic support to students under the age of 25 who have caring responsibilities, from the point of application through to graduation and their transition into employment. Through tailored support, UniCares works to ensure that young adult carers are able to thrive throughout their time at university.
Reflecting on the impact of the service, one student young adult carer said:
“Without this support, I think I would have had to leave. That’s not something I say lightly. Being able to stay, keep studying, and still be there for my dad means everything to me. I feel more settled now and actually able to focus on my work instead of just surviving.”
The UniCares service is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of young adult carers at City St George's. The University is continually striving to develop and improve its support, ensuring that students with caring responsibilities have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed."
