Degree Certificates

Degree certificates are usually presented at your graduation ceremony. If you do not attend, you can request your certificate by post or arrange to collect it in person.

City St George’s does not provide digital degree certificates — unlike transcripts, certificates are only issued as paper copies. Replacement certificates and certified copies are available if required.

Merging legacy City and St George's resources

As we bring together resources for Clerkenwell & Moorgate (legacy City) and Tooting (legacy St George’s) students, some content may be specific to one campus and not the other. For the most relevant information, try using specific keywords or exploring content related to your department. If you need help, our support teams are available to guide you.

Clerkenwell & Moorgate students can use Support@City

Tooting students can contact studentlifecentre@sgul.ac.uk.

Degree certificates for July 2026 graduation

There are various ways graduating students can receive degree certificates:

Clerkenwell and Moorgate students

Students attending their graduation ceremony will be handed their certificates on stage at the Barbican.

Students who do not attend their July 2026 ceremony will be given the opportunity to request  their certificate via the form linked to in their graduation invitation email. (Certificates will then be printed/distributed in late-July/early-August 2026

If you do not complete the certificate request form (or contact us), your certificate will not be printed until such time as you contact the Student Records/Graduation team and formally request it.

Tooting students

Degree certificates will be posted out by the University of London or Registry (depending on the degree awarding body). Certificates can take up to three months to be posted to graduates following their graduation ceremony.

Replacement certificates

We do not keep copies of certificates (digital or hard copy), but if you need a Replacement Certificate, we can produce one for you.

Please note, only one hard copy of your certificate can be in existence at any one time, and a replacement will only be issued in the event that the original certificate has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

Transcripts

Clerkenwell and Moorgate students– please contact your School Office. (Please note that historical requests for transcripts prior to 2004 may take up to two months to process).

If you are requesting a certificate for a module you completed as part of your studies at the School of Health and Medical Sciences, you should contact your department directly.

Tooting students - transcript queries related to BSc Biomedical Science and the MBBS programmes, should email Student Systems .

Alumni of the St George’s University of London MBBS programme delivered by UNIC should contact the University of Nicosia Registrar , Mr Hero Glykys-Philaniotis, with any queries concerning references, degree certificates or transcripts.

University name changes

Degree certificates show the name of the institution at the time that the degree was awarded. (Please note that the award date refers to when your degree was officially agreed and conferred, not the date of your graduation ceremony). Even if a student receives a replacement certificate many years later, it will still show the institution name as it was known when they were originally awarded.

On 1st September 2016, the City University London joined the University of London and became City, University of London. (For information purposes we have provided a letter that explains the change of name).

On 1st August 2024, City, University of London merged with St George’s, University of London to become City St George’s, University of London. (You can find further information about the merger on our website).

Legacy St George's

* Though the University became known as City St George's, University of London on 1st August 2024, students who were completing their courses at the time of the merger were awarded degrees under the previous names - City, University of London and St George's, University of London. Only awards conferred from 1st January 2025 onwards were issued under the new name - City St George’s, University of London.

City St George’s, University of London is the legal successor institution, but degrees awarded under the former university names (The City University London / City, University of London / St George's, University of London) remain fully valid and recognised.

Authorised copies of certificates

Authorised copies of certificates are available to all students that hold an award from The City University London / City, University of London / City St George's, University of London.

Authorised copies are not a legally verified document. It just confirms that the information on the document is true and correct.

Clerkenwell and Moorgate students should complete the Authorised Copies of Certificates request form and upload a PDF copy of their original certificate. We will then stamp it to confirm that the information is true and correct and sign it on behalf of the Academic Registrar/Student Records Manager.

There is no charge for this service. Please note that this service is only for certificates. If you need a transcript authorising, contact your School instead.

Tooting students should email Student Systems.

Digital Degree Certificates

City St George do not provide 'digital' degree certificates. Unlike a transcript, certificates only exist on paper.

The only way to create a ‘digital’ certificate is to print the original (paper) document and then manually scan it (as a PDF file) – which you may do yourself.

Scanned copies of certificates are not kept on file.

Third party degree qualification verifications

Clerkenwell and Moorgate students (formerly ‘City, University of London’) – all verification requests should be submitted via Hedd; see below.

Tooting students (formerly ‘St George’s, University of London’) – all verification requests should be emailed to Student Systems.

Higher Education Degree Datacheck (Hedd)

City St George's, University of London has partnered with the Hedd online verification service for all third party degree verification requests for student and alumni verifications.

The online candidate verification service allows registered enquirers to input data provided by applicants (name, date of birth, institution, year of graduation, qualification classification etc.).

How to register with Hedd

To make an enquiry, the third party employer/institution should register via the Hedd website.

Select the institution name, City St George’s, University of London, from the list and choose the option to 'verify a degree award'. There is a charge of £14 per enquiry.

IMPORTANT: This service is only for students who attend/have attended the Clerkenwell and Moorgate campuses (i.e. the university formerly known as City, University of London). If you need a verification for a current/former student of the Tooting campus (i.e. the university formerly known as St George’s, University of London), please email Student Systems instead.

The third party employer/institution will also be required to upload a hand-signed consent form from the student in question. They should ask the student/graduate to include their student number (if they can) as this will speed up the response time. If they require further assistance, please email Hedd.

Making an enquiry

The third party employer/institution will need the individual’s name, date of birth, course and qualification.

For graduates they will also need their year of graduation and degree result. We recommend that they ask to see the degree certificate, if there is one, and use that as the basis of their verification enquiry or ask individuals to give them their data as they believe it’s recorded in the student records system.

Please ensure the correct information is supplied so your request can be processed quickly.
