City St George’s has guidelines on how you can use AI to support your studies.

Generative AI is an exciting technological tool. However, it’s important to know how to use AI responsibly, where you can use it to support your studies and where the use of AI is not permitted.

City St George’s has developed detailed guidance on the use of AI, and a Moodle module is available for all students to complete: Using Generative AI at University.

When you can use Generative AI

Generative AI is generally allowed to support your studies, as it can be a useful tool to support your studies by:

  • clarifying key concepts
  • helping you generate ideas
  • asking questions based on your revision notes.

When you can’t use Generative AI

You are not allowed to use Generative AI its use for assessments unless you have been expressly instructed to use it by your module tutor or programme director. On these occasions, guidance will be provided on where and how you can use AI, and you must follow this guidance.

Key things to know about using Generative AI:

  • Is it accurate? Remember to carefully review the content for accuracy, reliability and credibility, just as you would any other source in your studies. Because AI has been trained on a specific set of data, it is only as up to date as this data is, so you need to be aware of potential biases, inaccuracies and misinformation.
  • Referencing: You need to reference your source when you use AI. You can find support on how to reference it on the guidance available on the Student Hub.
  • Using the right AI tool: City St George’s students have free access to Microsoft Copilot. You can access Microsoft Copilot online, or through iOS or Android App, using your University log in details.
  • Misuse: Where Generative AI has been misused, this is classified as academic misconduct. You can see the Academic Integrity and Misconduct Policy for more details.
